Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, William Clifford first discovered his passion for antiques when he moved to Cleveland Ohio in 1954, it all started with the gift of an antique music box which had him captivated and so at the age of 19 William’s hobby of antique collecting began.
His frequent travels back to Scotland were spent antique hunting and building his knowledge in the trade, with his sister Mary moving to Los Angeles in 1964 William saw an opportunity to expand his hobby into a business, shipping his first container and opening Clifford Antiques at a small premises in Brentwood,
California. It didn’t take long to realize that the demand for British antiques was high and 1966 saw the move to an amazing 4,000 square feet beach front location in Malibu, the shop was the go to place for countless celebrities, interior designers, movie studios and any antique enthusiast in Los Angeles, with the filming of the Rockford Files just across the street the business thrived here for 15 years.Due to the Malibu premises being sold they found themselves moving again in 1980 to another warehouse location on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica, all the while William continued to visit Scotland and acquire more inventory as his sister Mary and niece Jacqui overseen the running of the store in LA.
Retiring in the year 2000, William and family closed the doors on Clifford Antiques for the last time, or so they thought, William never lost his passion for antiques and constantly found himself exploring rural locations, auction houses and castles in Scotland, continuing to collect items dating from the 17th century to more recent Mid Century pieces, finding his 5,000 square feet warehouse in Glasgow full to the brim he made the decision to re-establish the business in 2014, opening a new showroom / warehouse in Glendale, Los Angeles, a short distance from the trendy Magnolia Blvd in Burbank stretched with vintage clothing and antique stores.
